The Windows KIN One cell phone sports a fold-out QWERTY keyboard that is also compact – so it’s perfect for one-handed texters.

The KIN One cell phone includes a solid 5.0 megapixel camera and is backed with 4GB of internal memory.

In their press release, Microsoft tells us that the KIN One cell phone was designed specifically for people who are actively navigating their social lives. The KIN One cell phone was brought to life through partnerships with Verizon Wireless, Vodafone and Sharp Corporation, KIN is designed to be the ultimate social experience that blends the phone, online services and the PC with breakthrough new experiences called the Loop, Spot and Studio.

The Windows KIN One will be exclusively available from Verizon Wireless in the U.S. beginning in May and from Vodafone this autumn in Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

“Working closely with our partners, we saw an opportunity to design a mobile experience just for this social generation — a phone that makes it easy to share your life moment to moment,” said Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft.

“We built KIN for people who live to be connected, share, express and relate to their friends and family. This social generation wants and needs more from their phone. KIN is the one place to get the stuff you care about to the people you care about most.”

A New Kind of Social Phone

With KIN One, social networking is built into the fabric of the cell phone. KIN has a fun, simple interface, which is designed to help people publish the magazine of their life by making the people and stuff they love the focus rather than menus and icons. The unique hardware design was developed in partnership with Sharp to create a new kind of social phone.

The New Way to Share

The home screen of the phone is called the KIN Loop, which is always up to date and always on, showing all the things happening in someone’s social world. KIN automatically brings together feeds from leading Microsoft and third-party services such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter all in one place, making it easier to stay connected. Customers can also select their favorite people, and KIN will automatically prioritize their status updates, messages, feeds and photos.

Another unique feature, the KIN Spot is a new way for people to share what’s going on in their world. It lets them focus first on the people and stuff they want to share rather than the specific application they want to use. Videos, photos, text messages, Web pages, location and status updates are shared by simply dragging them to a single place on the phone called the Spot. Once all the people and content are in the Spot to share, the consumer can choose how to share, and start broadcasting.

Your Phone, on the Web

KIN Studio is your phone online. Almost everything created on the phone is available in the cloud from any Web browser. Photos and videos are freed from the confines of the phone and presented in an online visual timeline so they are easy to view and share. The KIN Studio automatically backs up texts, call history, photos, videos and contacts, and populates a personalized digital journal so it’s easy to go back in time to relive a crazy weekend or recent birthday. And the KIN Studio gives customers tons of storage to keep all those photos, videos, contacts and texts so they’ll never run out of space on their phone and lose a memory.

Music and More

KIN will be the first Windows Phone to feature a Zune experience — including music, video, FM radio and podcast playback. With a Zune Pass subscription, customers using Zune software on their PC can listen to millions of songs from Zune Marketplace on their KIN while on the go, or load their personal collection. KIN also has other features customers want in a phone including a rich browser with the ability to share pieces of the Web, local and Web search by Bing, and an RSS feed reader to pull down information on people and stories from the Web.

Windows 7 Phone is more than the Microsoft smartphone we’ve been waiting for. Everything’s different now

The Windows Phone 7 Series reorganizes the cell phone, web and applications to deliver a mobile experience redesigned from the ground up. For the very first tine Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience are being made available on a cell phone.

This brand new, totally fresh operating system will appear in cell phones this year, but not until the holidays. All of the major wireless carriers and every likely hardware maker are backing it, and they’d be stupid not to. It’s totally awesome.

In the same way that the Windows 7 desktop OS was nearly everything people hoped it would be, Windows Phone 7 is almost everything anyone could’ve dreamed of in a cell phone, let alone a Microsoft phone.

Being tipped as the iPhone killer, Windows 7 Phone changes everything. But why?

Now that Microsoft has finally caught up with the cell phone market, the three most significant companies in desktop computing—Apple, Google and Microsoft—now look to occupy the same positions in mobile technology. Cell phones are officially computers that just happen to fit in your pocket.

So whats all the fuss about?

When Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer announced the Windows Phone 7 Series, the internet seemingly went into overdrive. Surely this is just another handset, so why all the excitement?

Well one example is the Quick Launch screen. It is a far-cry from the old Windows Mobile start screen. Large, colorful tiles serve as shortcuts to your most-used or favorite apps or Web sites. You can also place live tiles on the screen with links to your Facebook profile or friends.

These tiles are live, meaning if the content of the app or site is updated, the tile will update on your screen. So if you have a link to a friend’s Facebook profile on your Quick Launch screen, that tile will update when they change their picture.

With a tap and drag, you can easily move them around in any order you like or press a broken heart icon to remove them from the screen. Swiping right takes you to a list of all of your apps. If you want to move one of your apps to your Quick Launch display, you simply press down on the app and select “add to quick launch.”

When you’re in an app, you’ll see a row of other menu options at the top of the display. Like the Zune, you can “pan” through these menu items with a flick of your finger. If you want to go back to the previous menu, you simply hit the arrow key at the top of the interface.

The People hub is another great feature. It provides one-click access to all your contacts, pulled from across the web and arranged in popularity order of “importance”, from those friends and family you interact with most appearing further up the page, and those you contact infrequently pushed down the virtual pecking order. You can even make specific “tiles” for your favourite people.

It’s a dynamic, personalised user experience that will change over time, in real time, depending on the type and flow of your daily interactions. There’s even a “What’s New” section, which pulls in social-networking updates from your contacts, straight from sites such as Facebook.

All in all, we think that Microsoft has worked minor miracles with its new mobile phone operating system and Windows 7 Phone or Windows Phone 7 Series (whichever you prefer) is going to be an outstanding success for the company.

The cell phones, named KIN One and KIN Two, come with an entirely new interface that puts social services such as Facebook, Twitter and newsfeeds at its core.

“If you are focused on social connection, self expression and a digital life, how do you bring that to a phone?” says Robbie Bach, president for entertainment and devices division at Microsoft. “As we were working on Windows Phone 7, we decided we had an opportunity to go after this social group of people?”

KIN One is a petite, rounded device with a 2.1-inch screen. Kin Two is a larger, palm-sized device with a 3.5-inch display.

KIN One has a 5-megapixel camera, while Kin Two sports an 8-megapixel camera. Both phones have multitouch displays, an accelerometer and video-recording capability, as well as hardware keyboards that slide out from underneath the screen.

Cell phones that integrate closely with social networking sites have been a huge trend with handset makers in the last two years. Almost every major phone maker, including Motorola and HTC, has phones that integrate Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, MySpace and newsfeeds into a single stream on the phone’s display.

Microsoft’s latest cell phones are based on the concept of sharing, and try to bring the PC and the phone closer, say company reps.

The cell phones use some components from the company’s latest operating system, Windows Phone 7. But it isn’t exactly the same OS that powers this device, says Bach.

Think of it as a fork in the road for Windows Mobile 7, where Microsoft has taken some components from the OS and added a new interface layer to create the KIN phone, says Microsoft.

KIN phones will have three home screens. The first includes access to e-mail, phone, newsfeeds, photos and browser. Swipe to the left and the next screen throws up a stream of status messages updated from contacts and newsfeeds. Swipe to the left once more and the third screen is a list of favorites marked by the phone users and what their social status says right then.

What makes the KIN different, says Microsoft, is that it automatically backs up all its contents on a password-protected website. This idea of storing information in the cloud means users can access their photos, videos, messages and even call history from a browser anywhere and don’t have to just depend on their cell phone.

The service offers unlimited storage, says Microsoft and it will be free.

KIN also integrates Microsoft’s Zune digital music service. The phone’s music player has the same interface as the Zune HD. It also includes access only to Bing search.

The cell phones have been manufactured by Sharp and will be available on Verizon’s Wireless network in May and on Vodafone in Europe later this year.

“Sharp is excited to team with Microsoft as the exclusive handset manufacturer for the KIN phone. Combining Sharp’s cutting-edge LCD and mobile device technology with Microsoft’s cloud computing technology, KIN represents an innovative new mobile experience. It’s a fun, convenient way to keep connected and another example of how Sharp is committed to improving people’s lives with ubiquitous communications.” said Mikio Katayama, Representative Director, President and CEO of Sharp Corp.

John Harrobin, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Digital Media at Verizon Wireless released a statement saying “KIN represents a new way to stay connected. We are excited to take our relationship with Microsoft to the next level and be the exclusive carrier of KIN in the U.S.”

Patrick Chomet , Group Director of Terminals at Vodafone released a statement saying:

“Vodafone is delighted to further its partnership with Microsoft, bringing our customers Microsoft’s latest innovation — KIN.

Mobile social networking is increasingly having strong appeal for our customers. KIN has a unique and intuitive way of engaging with the user, enabling them easily to share experiences and stay in touch with their friends. Our aim is to provide our customers with the widest choice of attractive smartphones and the best-in-class experience of new services through Vodafone’s high-speed mobile broadband network.

This announcement continues to deliver on our ambition to be the strongest provider of data-centric mobile experiences across platforms and operating systems.”
